Testimonials

WHAT CERTIFICATION MEANS TO ME by John W. Jerome

As a newly “minted” SPHR, I am extremely proud and grateful for the opportunity and challenge to elevate my credentials to such a high national standard.

My job as Human Resources Managers has many payoffs. Primary among them is being able to serve my fellow employees and to provide a valuable service to my company and to the community. Helping others sift through the complexity of benefit programs and packages and being able to protect my employer against a virtual minefield of legal vulnerability makes it all worth while.

Ensuring fairness in the treatment of employees is another valuable service provided by human resources professionals, for which we take pride. This is indeed an honorable profession that each member can make the most of when contributing to society at large.

The certifications I have earned are my best assurances that I have the tools I need to get it right. It’s a lot more than simply being proud of an accomplishment. It means that I know what it takes to get this all-important job done the right way. Because SHRM is the largest and most widely recognized professional association for Human Resources professionals, the certifications that they have developed are universally recognized and that is very important to me.

The study group, sponsored by HR-Tampa, was invaluable in helping me prepare for the certification exam. I am indebted to HR-Tampa and especially to the group leaders Lori Barndollar and Stephanie Ulmer for the stellar job they did in conducting the 2003 Fall Study Group. My hat is off to those two and I cannot thank them enough!
